Redfern Yoga Space is an Iyengar Yoga school. The yoga we teach is based on the teachings of BKS Iyengar (1918-2014), considered one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world.
Iyengar Yoga is a firm foundation for health and well-being. Regular practice relaxes, energises, improves concentration and develops flexibility and strength.
We practice a wide range of asanas (poses) including standing poses, seated poses, forward bends, twists, backbends, inversions and restorative poses. Pranayama (yogic breathing) is also practiced.
Iyengar yoga is a very physical practice, known for its focus on finding alignment in each pose, but it is not only about the physical body. We work with mind, body and breath to integrate all the aspects of our being, to bring into harmony our physical, energetic, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies.
As we practice we go inwards, quietening the senses and paying close attention. Our practice enlivens, strengthens and tunes the body, builds sensitivity and energetic connection, stabilises and nurtures the nervous system, quietens the mind and refines our ability to perceive more clearly, in each moment. Over time, we start to notice our underlying mental/emotional tendencies and habits. We become more connected with our innermost selves and grow in self-knowledge. This is the yoga journey.
In Light on Life, BKS Iyengar says:
‘health begins with firmness in body, deepens to emotional stability, then leads to intellectual clarity, wisdom and finally the unveiling of the soul’.
‘You do not need to seek freedom in a different land, for it exists with your own body, heart, mind and soul ‘
